Archaeological Investigation of Fort Norfolk (44NR1) 1977 (Norfolk District)
The Alexandria VCP laboratory has begun processing archaeological collections from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Norfolk District. In September 2014, the Alexandria VCP received collections from Fort Norfolk, Virginia that were housed in the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
Fort Norfolk was built after the Revolutionary War by order of President George Washington in order to protect the city of Norfolk. The fort was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The artifacts and archival records that make up the investigation, currently located at the VCP, are associated with the archaeological excavation conducted in 1977 at Fort Norfolk. The Alexandria VCP laboratory received eight boxes of artifacts and 0.25 linear inches of associated records from the Fort Norfolk investigation. The artifacts include historic materials and the archival records include field and report records from the Fort Norfolk investigation.
