Archaeological Survey of 3040 Acres at Strom Thurmond Lake

The investigation of Archaeological Survey of 3040 Acres at Strom Thurmond Lake spanned portions of McDuffie, Elbert, Wilkes, and Lincoln Counties, Georgia.  In two months of fieldwork, archaeologists identified 229 archaeological sites and recovered 6,682 artifacts.  Sites included the ruins of three mills, a Woodland-period mound, two nineteenth-century cemeteries, and numerous sites dating from the Archaic period to the early twentieth century.  The associated investigation archives, including 374 materials, were organized, cleaned, data-entered, and digitized by VCP technicians.
